How Is Salary Calculated in Latvia? The 7-Step Process

Understanding how your salary is calculated helps you make informed financial decisions. Here’s how the gross-to-net salary calculation works in Latvia:

  1. Employee Social Insurance (10.5%)
This is deducted from the gross salary. For example, if the gross salary is €1500, the social insurance deduction is €157.50 (10.5% of €1500).

  2. Number of Dependents
Each dependent provides a tax relief of €250, up to a maximum of 9 dependents. Beyond 9, the relief amount remains the same.

  3. Calculate Taxable Income
    Use the formula:
    Gross salary

  • Employee social insurance

  • Dependent relief (number of dependents × €250)

  • Fixed non-taxable minimum (€510 if the tax book is submitted, otherwise €0)

4. For example, with a gross salary of €1500, no dependents, and a submitted tax book:
€1500 - €157.50 - €0 - €510 = €832.50 taxable income. v v

5. Personal Income Tax (PIT)
PIT is applied to the taxable income. There are two rates:

  • 25.5% if annual gross salary is up to €8,775

  • 33% if above €8,775

6. In our example: €832.50 × 25.5% = €212.29 income tax.

7. Calculate Net Salary
Net salary = Gross salary - Employee social insurance - Income tax
€1500 - €157.50 - €212.29 = €1130.21 net salary.

What About Employer Costs?

Employers also pay social insurance contributions, which add to the total cost of employment:

  • Employer social insurance is 23.59% of the gross salary.
    For €1500 gross salary, that’s €353.85.

  • Add a fixed business risk state fee of €0.36.

  • Total employer cost = €1500 + €353.85 + €0.36 = €1854.21.
